Art Walks: Jean-Marc Nattier at Kunsthal Rotterdam

The Marquise de Baglion as Flora in the exhibition “Flowers Forever”

The UniCredit Art Collection is delighted that the painting  The Marquise de Baglion as Flora (1746) by Jean-Marc Nattier will be on loan for the exhibition “Flowers Forever” at Kunsthal Rotterdam, from 27 March to 30 August 2026.

This work is a characteristic example of Nattier’s portrait allegories of the French Rococo, in which he combines the elegance of courtly representation with mythological references.

The Rotterdam exhibition explores the diverse meanings of floral motifs in art, from botanical symbolism and allegorical roles to mythological interpretations. Within this context, Nattier’s portrayal of the Marquise as Flora offers a distinctive perspective: she appears as an embodiment of spring, accompanied by delicate floral details that lend the composition grace and lightness.

The painting was already very well received in the “Flowers Forever” exhibition at Kunsthalle München. Its presentation at Kunsthal Rotterdam adds an international dimension to this dialogue and highlights the many ways in which the motif of the flower has been interpreted artistically across different eras.

After the exhibition, the painting will once again be available as a long‑term loan to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen.
