From 24 July to 29 November 2026, the MAO – Museum of Oriental Art in Turin presents the exhibition Dreamscapes / Paesaggi da sogno, dedicated to the celebrated series The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō by Utagawa Hiroshige, one of the absolute masterpieces of 19th-century Japanese art and part of the UniCredit Art Collection. The prints have been on long-term loan to MAO since 2009.
The exhibition brings together a selection of 36 prints, aiming to recreate for visitors the immersive and “cinematic” dimension of this floating world. The display also includes a number of objects and examples of material culture that accompanied and enabled travel in Japan between the 18th and 19th centuries, offering a broader perspective on the historical context of the journey.
The project is curated by Laura Vigo, Curator of Asian Art and Archaeology at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), together with Claudia Ramasso, MAO Curator, and is developed in close collaboration with the Royal Museums of Turin.
