    Walter Pichler (Deutschnofen, Südtirol 1936 – Wien, Österreich 2012)

    Walter Pichler (geboren 1936) schuf eine Vielzahl von Zeichnungen, Skulpturen und architektonischen Konstruktionen, bei denen die Grenzen zwischen den verschiedenen Kunstrichtungen verfließen. Seine frühen Arbeiten waren inspiriert von der „utopischen Architektur“, die in Wien entstand und sich in den 1960er Jahren international verbreitete.

    Seine Skulpturen und Zeichnungen entstanden in einem langjährigen Prozess und standen in ständiger Wechselbeziehung zueinander; bei einigen der Skulpturen dauertees Jahrzehnte bis zu ihrer Fertigstellung.

    Die bedeutendsten SkulpturenPichlers, die in eigens dafür errichteten Architekturschalen aufgestellt sind, befinden sich in St. Martin im Burgenland, wo der Künstler bis zu seinem Lebensende lebte.

    Pichler erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Innsbruck und studierte an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. Er stellte international aus, unter anderem 1967 und 1975 im Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, 1968 auf der Documenta 4 in Kassel, 1982 im Österreichischen Pavillon auf der 40. Biennale in Venedig, 1978 im Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, 1988 und 2011 im MAK, Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Wien, 1998 in der Generali Foundation in Wien, 1998 im Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam und 2016/17 im Museum der Moderne in Salzburg.

    Er starb 2012 in Österreich.
