Biography
Scott Campbell (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, 1977)
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1977, Scott Campbell initially pursued university studies in biochemistry at the University of Texas. He later abandoned his academic path and moved to San Francisco, where he learned the art of tattooing at the historic Picture Machine studio, one of the oldest tattoo shops in California. After relocating to New York, he founded and currently directs Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, becoming one of the most internationally recognized tattoo artists.
Scott Campbell is known for an artistic practice and research that integrates the mastery of tattooing with refined sculptural processes and visual interventions associated with contemporary art. His works are characterized by an extreme attention to detail, craftsmanship, and the transformation of unexpected materials, which become vehicles for both personal and universal symbolism.
Among his most notable works are sculptures created through intricate carvings on U.S. dollar bills, a visual language that also defines works such as Swirl Skull, in which the motif of the skull emerges from a three-dimensional lattice of carved banknotes. This practice, central to his artistic production, transforms currency—symbol of power, value, and exchange—into a fragile and decorative material subjected to a process of incision that is both meticulously executed and conceptually subversive.
Campbell has also produced watercolor works inspired by his experience during a six-week stay in a maximum-security prison in Mexico City. This period profoundly affected him and prompted a reflection on vulnerability, humanity, and the extreme conditions experienced by those deprived of their freedom. Complementing his body of work is a series of refined graphite drawings executed inside eggshells, where fragility and technical precision combine in a poetic balance.
Presented in international exhibitions and included in significant collections and institutions, Campbell’s work confirms him as one of the most original and recognizable voices in the contemporary New York art scene.
Scott Campbell lives and works in New York.
