Biography
Maura Banfo (Turin, Italy, 1969)
Maura Banfo was born in Turin in 1969. After years of restless “wandering” exploring the world, she found in her hometown her own “nest,” where she began a research practice using photography as her predominant language. From the 1990s to the present, her work has marked important milestones within the Italian contemporary art system, while also gaining a significant presence internationally.Maura Banfo has always been fascinated by matter: in her decades-long research—marked by exhibitions, artist residencies, and numerous recognitions—she has carefully investigated reality, starting from the objects surrounding her and choosing to reinterpret them through photography (and not only) as new entities, stripped of their original meaning, as architectures to explore and forms to observe from unexpected viewpoints, opening them up to new codes of meaning. Her strength lies in maintaining a clearly recognizable creative imprint and poetic vision, while continuously discovering new facets and perspectives: although photography remains her preferred medium, she also works with mastery in video, drawing, and installation. Her works are included in many private and public collections. The artist lives and works in Turin. -
