    Giovanni Ghisolfi (Milan, Italy, 1623–1683)
     
    Born in 1623 in Milan, he trained in the studio of Chignoli.
     
    In 1649, he created the decorations for the reception of Archduchess Marianna of Austria in Italy, an event that marked his recognition as an artist.
     
    In 1650, he moved to Rome to study ancient architecture and drawing, where he met Salvator Rosa, from whom he learned the technique of architectural drawing, which became prominent in his Roman-period works.
     
    Returning to Milan in 1659, he worked on the fresco decoration of the third chapel on the right in the Certosa of Pavia. During these years, Ghisolfi approached Baroque art.
    After a few fruitful years in Vicenza, the artist returned to Rome. His works now displayed a great compositional simplicity combined with rich Baroque decoration.
    In the final years of his life, sources say he was struck by an illness that left him nearly blind.
     
    The artist died in Milan in 1683.
