Marco Ricci (Attribuito a) Italian, 1676-1730

 

Nephew of the more famous Sebastiano Ricci, Marco Ricci was born in Belluno in 1676.
Inspired by Titian, Tempesta, and Eismann, he turned to landscape painting, with a strong focus on the rendering of light and atmospheric effects.
He also looked to Salvator Rosa and Alessandro Magnasco, whose brushwork he imitated.

Sources report that Marco “from childhood was with his uncle in Venice,” although it is difficult to determine exactly when he moved there.

Between 1708 and 1716, he spent a short period in England, working for Lord Manchester on stage sets for the Italian Opera at the Queen’s Theatre in Haymarket.

After returning to Venice in 1716, he continued to produce scenographic works—in paintings, drawings, and prints—often featuring the theme of ruins.

He died in Venice in 1730
