On October 30, the State Museum Schwerin in Germany reopened its doors to the public after four years. This historic institution now presents itself in a refreshed light following extensive modernization—more colorful, inclusive, digital, and family-friendly. It features a completely redesigned permanent exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through the centuries, now with more exhibition space than before.
A highlight of the permanent exhibition is the monumental nail relief “White Scream” by Günther Uecker, which has been on long-term loan from the HVB Art Collection and displayed at the State Museum Schwerin for many years.
The artwork captivates with its powerful energy, dynamic structure, and striking light effects. The swirling, wave-like movements of the nails resemble frozen sound waves—as if a scream were made physically visible in space. At the same time, the surface evokes associations with natural phenomena such as wind, water, or fields of grain. Uecker masterfully unites pain and beauty in a single piece, creating a deeply emotional visual language.
Günther Uecker is considered one of the most important contemporary German artists. His roots in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lend his work special cultural significance for the region.
His signature nail artworks have had a global impact on contemporary art. They compellingly demonstrate how an everyday object can be transformed into a complex, socially relevant form of expression.
Take advantage of free admission and experience Günther Uecker’s impressive nail relief—and discover many other fascinating works at the newly reopened State Museum Schwerin.
