The Digitization of the Carracci Room

On the occasion of International Museum Day 2025, UniCredit Art Collection and Haltadefinizione present to the public the high-definition enhancement project of the Carracci frescoes at Palazzo Magnani, the bank’s headquarters in Bologna.

Coordinated by the Metropolitan City of Bologna and the Bologna Civic Museums Department, and scheduled for Sunday, May 18, UniCredit Art Collection and Haltadefinizione —a tech company of the Panini Cultura Group—are launching a new project that combines art and technology to enhance the bank’s art collection.

The project involves the digitization of The Stories of the Foundation of Rome, the grand decorative fresco cycle that represents one of the highest artistic expressions of Ludovico, Annibale, and Agostino Carracci, created between 1589 and 1592 on the main floor of Palazzo Magnani, the historic headquarters of the bank in Bologna.

The fresco cycle was captured using gigapixel technology through an extensive photographic campaign that recorded the entire painted surface. Over 7,300 shots were taken, along with 360° footage of the Carracci Room.

As was done in 2024 for The Awakening of Venus by Dosso Dossi—another artwork from the UniCredit Art Collection housed in the Quadreria of Palazzo Magnani—the Carracci masterpiece will now also be accessible to the public in new ways thanks to Haltadefinizione’s work.

On Sunday, May 18, a multimedia totem will be set up in the hall that houses the original work, displaying the digitized version of The Story of the Foundation of Rome: an immersive experience that allows visitors to “move” within the frescoes, admire micro-details, and receive real-time historical and artistic insights.

During the special opening of the Palazzo, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., visitors will be able to explore the entire historic building, including the art collection displayed in its splendid Quadreria, which spans from the 16th to the 20th century.
