    Adolf Frohner (Groß-Inszersdorf, Austria 1934 - Vienna, Austria 2007)

    Nato nel 1934, insieme a Otto Muehl e Hermann Nitsch è stato cofondatore dell'Azionismo viennese. Questo movimento, nato a Vienna negli anni Sessanta, portava avanti un’arte performativa irruenta, radicale ed esplicita. Il gruppo metteva in scena, filmava e fotografava in modo collaborativo performance note come "azioni". Il lavoro consisteva nel fare affermazioni che rompevano tabù, spesso muovendosi fuori dal perimetro della legalità e con azioni respingenti, che esprimevano alla base una violenta insoddisfazione nei confronti del governo e della società borghese dell'Austria del Secondo Dopoguerra.

    Gli Azionisti, pensando che gli Austriaci stessero reprimendo i ricordi delle indicibili atrocità commesse dai Nazisti nel loro Paese, cercavano di indurre le persone ad affrontare questi traumi attraverso la loro arte. 

    Frohner inizia realizzando dipinti astratti con gli Azionisti Viennesi e successivamente si concentrerà sulla pittura su tavola e sulla rappresentazione di figure femminili.

    Si trasferisce a Vienna nel 1952, dove frequenta l’Accademia di Pubblicità Commerciale e, contemporaneamente, come studente ospite, l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Vienna, sotto la guida di Herbert Boeckl. Nel 1961 Frohner lavora come pittore e illustratore freelance, trascorrendo un anno a Parigi con una borsa di studio dell'UNESCO, dove conosce gli artisti del Nouveaux Réalistes.

    Frohner ha rappresentato l'Austria alla Biennale di San Paolo del 1969 e alla Biennale di Venezia del 1970. Nel 1972 è stato insignito del Premio di Stato austriaco e nominato professore all'Università di Arti Applicate di Vienna. Nel 1989 è stato anche Vicerettore della stessa Università.

    Nel 2007 l'artista muore inaspettatamente all'età di 73 anni.
