  • The Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan is one of the most solid and important institutions in the Italian art scene; it was established in 1776 by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria during the rule of the Habsburg territories.

The Brera Academy of Fine Arts is located in the imposing Palazzo Brera, previously a Jesuit college for over two hundred years. In addition to the Academy, the palace houses the Pinacoteca di Brera (art gallery), Braidense National Library, a botanical garden and other cultural institutions.

The Brera Academy of Fine Arts was created to stimulate a new way of teaching fine arts, revolutionary in its direct response to public opinion and collective tastes rather than artists guilds and craftsmen. This encouraged a fertile dynamism both in the city and in the Academy, with a major impact on modern Italian identity.

The Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan is one of the most prestigious, landmark academies in Italy.
