Niccolò Musso (Casale Monferrato, Italy 1585/90 – Italy 1623/27)

Born in Casale Monferrato between 1585 and 1590, he was an apprentice in Rome, where he first experienced the paintings of Caravaggio.

There is little documentation from his Roman period but, the collection of artworks held by Marquis Giustiniani - a cultured collector who focused on the paintings of young contemporary artists working in the style of Caravaggio – includes some of his artworks.

In 1618, Musso returned to his hometown, where he was called to decorate the Casale Castle, a Gonzaga residence, and the annexed Church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

The precise date of Musso's death is unknown, placed between 1623, a year in which he was still active, and 1627, the year in which an inventory of his assets was put together post-mortem.
