Biography
Maurizio Cannavacciuolo (Naples, Italy, 1954)
Born in Naples in 1954, Maurizio Cannavacciuolo chose to pursue art as a self-taught artist in the 1970s, after leaving the Faculty of Architecture to begin collaborating with Lucio Amelio’s gallery.
Quickly establishing himself on the international scene, he travelled extensively in the late 1980s, especially to Southeast Asia and the Americas.
His iconographic and conceptual research navigates between horror vacui and theater-of-the-absurd-like humour, offering a vision of art and life that, though ironic, remains deeply insightful. His work explores the very roots of our being through a painting style firmly grounded in Mediterranean tradition, while also enriched by Middle Eastern influences.
He takes part in numerous group exhibitions, including: Galleria Giampaolo Abbondio in Todi; Studio Guenzani in Milan; Sperone Westwater in New York; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC) in Santiago de Chile; Museu da República, Galeria Catete in Rio de Janeiro; and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.
He now lives and works in Rome.
