Biography
Sabrina Mezzaqui (Bologna, Italy, 1964)
Sabrina Mezzaqui was born in Bologna in 1964. She graduated from the Istituto Statale d'Arte in 1985 and then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where she currently teaches.
On her journey, she rediscovers slow, repetitive gestures as a measure of the passage of time – a recurring theme in her work, which she conveys through the representation of handwork and the hourly repetition of small movements.
Her artistic activity is based on a deep connection with literature and the written word. Her artworks often stem from long periods of meditation and self-imposed “isolation”. Manual skills and gestures, almost like rituals marked by the passing of time, also play an essential role in her work.
She exhibits in public spaces in Italy, such as MAR in Ravenna, Museo Civico d'Arte in Modena, GAM in Turin, Triennale in Milan and Palazzo delle Papesse in Siena. Abroad she shows in venues such as PS1, in New York, INOVA, in Milwaukee, Musée d'art moderne et contemporain, in Saint-Étienne, MOCA, in Buenos Aires, and Bengal Art Lounge, in Dhaka.
The artist currently lives and works in Marzabotto, in the province of Bologna.
