    Biography

Minjung Kim (Gwangju, Republic of Korea, 1962)

Born in Gwangju, South Korea, in 1962, Minjung Kim trained under various teachers including the renowned watercolourist Yeongyun Kang. She also studied Eastern calligraphy.

In 1985, she graduated from Hongik University in Seoul, where she gained an extensive background in Eastern painting. She then went on to complete a Master's degree at the same institution. Later, she moved to Milan, Italy, and earned a diploma from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1991.

The study of calligraphy taught her to communicate through a meticulously controlled use of the brush, which allows her to channel the energy of the hand and direct it onto paper.

Following the Eastern tradition, she always painted on the floor. In 1998, she began working on layered paper, burning parts of the surface to create a three-dimensional effect symbolising the layers of time.

After graduating from the Brera Academy, Kim lived and worked in Italy. She showcased her works worldwide, including in Switzerland, China, England, the United States, and Israel.

She has exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, such as: Princeton University Art Museum in New Jersey, USA (2020); Gwangju Museum of Art, South Korea (2018); OCI Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea (2015); Oko in New York, USA (2014); Studio d'Arte Raffaelli in Trento, Italy (2014); MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art Rome) in Rome, Italy (2012); Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, UK (2008); Guanshanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen, China (2007).

She also participated in the Gwangju Biennale of Art in 2004 and 2018.

Her work is on display in numerous international public collections, including the British Museum in London, UK; Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea; Musée des Arts Asiatiques in Nice, France; Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University in New York, USA; Sbygningen Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark; OCI Art Museum in Seoul, South Korea.

She currently lives and works between France and the United States.
