    Walter Vopava (Vienna (AT), 1948)

Walter Vopava was born in Vienna in 1948 and is one of the most important contemporary Austrian abstract artists. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Professor Maximilian Melcher. Although he initially often depicted landscapes and still lifes, the artist's focus has shifted over time to abstract painting. The paintings often play with light and dark elements, the colour palette often kept small and pure, resulting in a very atmospheric end product.

Vopava's art has often been exhibited in his home country and internationally. The artist and his works have been represented at the Galleria Torbandena in Trieste, the Convent des Cordeliers in Paris, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing and the Secession in Vienna.

In 2011, he was awarded the Austrian Art Prize for Fine Arts and is also a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the Vienna Secession.

Walter Vopava lives and works in Vienna.
