    Josef Kern (Schiefer (AT), 1953)

Josef Kern studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Wolfgang Hollegha from 1972 to 1979.

Josef Kern had his first solo exhibitions at the Ariadne Gallery in Vienna (1987) and the Maier Gallery in Innsbruck (1981). In the following years, the artist also exhibited internationally with both solo and group exhibitions at the Galleria Torbandena in Trieste, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Bologna and the Salford Museum and Art Gallery in Manchester. The most recent exhibition was in 2023 at Galerie Jünger in Vienna with the title: ‘Josef Kern: Ausgedacht und abgemalt’.

Josef Kern is one of the ‘Neue Wilden’ (new savages), a group of artists from Austria and Germany working in the 1980s. This group also included, among others, Herbert Brandl, Gunter Damisch, Alois Mosbacher, Maria Lassnig and Hubert Schmalix. This group was characterised above all by a modern expressionism that set the art world of the time in renewed motion.

Today, Josef Kern lives and works in Vienna.
