Martha Jungwirth (Vienna (AT), 1940)

Martha Jungwirth was born in Vienna in 1940. From 1956 to 1963, she studied under Carl Unger at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. She also taught there between 1967 and 1977.

Her first solo exhibition was shown at the Galerie zum Roten Apfel in Vienna in 1962. This was even before she graduated from the academy a year later. More solo exhibitions at home and abroad followed in the years to come. In the 1960s, Jungwirth spent several months in New York. Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Great Britain and Japan are just a few examples of the countries in which the artist was represented in solo exhibitions. In 1977 she was part of the documenta 6 in Kassel.

She has been honoured with several awards throughout her career, including the ‘Theodor Körner Prize’ in 1964 and the ‘Joan Mirò Prize’ in 1966.

Together with Wolfgang Herzig, Kurt Kocherscheidt, Peter Pongratz, Franz Ringel and Robert Zeppel-Sperl, she was a representative of the artists' group “Wirklichkeiten”.

The artist lives and works in Vienna.
