Peter Zimmermann (Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany 1956)

The artist studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts from 1978-83. He works as a painter, sculptor and object artist. From 2002 to 2007 he was a professor at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.

As a painter, sculptor and object artist, Zimmermann is one of the representatives of appropriation art and media art. In his work, he is particularly concerned with the theme of reproduction and the question of the relationship between original and copy.

Peter Zimmermann has devoted himself entirely to abstraction since the mid-1990s. He finds his motifs on the Internet, which he dissolves into colour using a special process with the help of Photoshop. In the process, the motif loses all representational reference. The resulting abstract images serve him as sketches, which he pours, drips and dabs onto the canvas in bright colours, layer by layer of epoxy resin mixed with pigment. This creates transparent round and oval shapes, three-dimensional layers of colour and light that form new colour intersections in the overlapping areas.

His works are represented in important collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Neue Galerie Graz in Austria, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris and the New Orleans Museum of Modern Art.
