    Rupprecht Geiger (Munich, Germany 1908-2008)

Immediately after the war, he co-founded and gave his name to the ZEN 49 group alongside Günther Uecker and Fritz Winter, which continued the great tradition of the "Blaue Reiter" in Munich.

In 1965, Geiger was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Academy, a post he held until 1976. Geiger has been a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 1982.

Geiger developed an independent and decidedly stringent oeuvre centred on colour. His intensely radiant panels of simple order have a stimulating effect on the viewer. He simplified the forms to allow the colours to stand out without distraction. From the 1960s onwards, he began to modulate colour fields in monochrome, causing the colour to vibrate and appear dematerialised. Light and colour are at the heart of his artistic statement.

In addition to numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad, Geiger took part in the documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977.
In 2002, he represented Germany at the XXV Biennial in So Paulo.

He has also been honoured with the Berlin Art Prize, the Grand Federal Cross of Merit, the Upper Bavarian Culture Prize and is one of the three honorary members of the German Artists' Association.
