    Imi Knoebel (Dessau, Germany 1940)

From 1962, Imi Knoebel attended courses in structural and constructive design at the Darmstadt Werkkunstschule.

In 1964, he transferred to the Düsseldorf Art Academy - first to Breker's class, then to Beuys'.

Inspired by the oeuvre of Piet Mondrian and Kasimir Malevich, he uses a purist, geometric formal language and meticulously coordinated colour tones in his works.

In May 2006, Imi Knoebel was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and in 2011 he was honoured with the Kythera Prize. In 2008, he was commissioned to create six new stained glass windows for Reims Cathedral, which were inaugurated in 2011 to mark the 800th anniversary of the cathedral.

The artist is represented in numerous international collections such as the MoMA in New York, the ZKM in Karlsruhe and the Albertina in Vienna. He took part in the documenta exhibitions 5, 6, 7 and 8. In 2009, the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Deutsche Guggenheim presented a major retrospective of his work in Berlin. In 2023, the Sammlung Goetz in Munich honoured him with a retrospective exhibition to mark his 80th birthday.
