Domenico Maria Canuti (Bologna, Italy, 1556 – Bologna, Italy, 1629)

Born in Bologna in 1556, after completing his studies, he initially worked in a goldsmith's workshop. However, he soon abandoned this career to pursue a deeper understanding of drawing, following Giovan Battista Bertusi’s guidance.

Afterwards, Count Roderico Pepoli introduced him to the studio of Francesco Albani and Guido Reni, where he remained until the latter's death occurred in 1642.

He then moved to Giovanni Andrea Sirani's workshop, acquiring, in 1643, the title of prince of the Accademia del Disegno degli Indistinti.

He lived in Rome between the end of 1646 and 1651 and in 1672. There, he worked on two frescoesfor the tribune of St. Francesca Romana and collaborated with Francesco Cozza and Carlo Maratti to decorate Palazzo Altieri and Palazzo Colonna

The Roman artistic environment deeply resonated with Canuti's style. Indeed, when he returned to his hometown, his unique style and technique set him apart from the other painters.

In the following years, he first moved toModena and then to Padua, and in 1668, he returned to Bologna to fresco Palazzo Fava.

He spent the last years of his life in Rome, dying afterwards in Bologna in 1684
