Carlos Garaicoa (Havana, Cuba, 1967)

Carlos Garaicoa was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1967.

He initially studied thermodynamics but later shifted his focus to painting, pursuing studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana.

Garaicoa connects art to the urban space. His goal is to investigate Cuban social structures through the architecture of cities, especially that of Havana.

He took part in numerous international exhibitions, including the Havana Biennal (1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2009, 2012, 2015) and the Venice Biennale (2005, 2009).

Additionally, he presented his artworks in Johannesburg (1995), in Liverpool (2006), in Moscow (2005), at the Auckland Triennial (2007), in San Juan (2004), in Yokohama (2001), and during the Echigo-Tsumari art festival (2012).

His works were also featured in significant exhibitions such as Documenta 11 (2003), Documenta 14 (2017), and PhotoEspaña 12 (2012).

In 2005, he received the XXXIX International Contemporary Art Prize – Foundation Prince Pierre de Monaco, as well as the Katherine S. Marmor Award in Los Angeles.

In 2021, he was awarded with the PEM Prize.

The artist now lives and works between Madrid and Havana.
