Tommaso del Mazza, also known as the Master of Saint Verdiana (Florence, Italy around 1350 - 1400)

The activity of Tommaso del Mazza, known as the Master of Saint Verdiana, is documented in Florence, Prato and Pisa between 1375 and 1391.

The owner of a painting workshop in Florence, he worked in the late Gothic style at the beginning of the Florentine Renaissance.

At the beginning of his career, in the 1470s, he was active in the workshop of Andrea Orcagna, whose influence can be seen in the use of golden backgrounds and a marked attention to the surface of the image, with brilliant colours.

For the artist, a search for themes and their symbolism determined a stylized approach to painting.

In the 1390s, the Master of Saint Verdiana left the workshop to become an independent artist.

There is little information on his death, which probably occurred in Florence around 1400.
