Pieter van Bloemen, known as Lo Stendardo (Antwerp, Belgium 1675 – Antwerp, Belgium 1720)

The older brother of landscape painter Jan Frans, they moved to Rome together to live for a few years in a community of Dutch and Flemish artists.

A prolific artist, he was most well-known for the representation of figures and animals, collaborating with other painters, including his younger brother, who often entrusted him to add figures to his famous landscape compositions.

His preferred subjects were animals, particularly horses, both still and in motion, painted with the famous Flemish accuracy. His compositions often show military camps, stables, battles and riding lessons, as well as scenes in Rome or the Roman countryside.

In 1694, he returned to Antwerp, where he opened a painting school.

He died in Antwerp in 1720.
