    Herbert Brandl (1959, Graz, Austria)

Born in 1959, Herbert Brandl is a contemporary Austrian painter, known for his participation in the “New Wilds” group, a term used for the neo-expressionists of the 1980s who used intense colours and broad brushstrokes, following a stylistic code opposite to minimalism and conceptual art.

Brandl produces large canvases with brilliant colours, oscillating between abstraction and depiction, often focusing on landscapes including mountain peaks, waterfalls and animals.

The artist attended the University of Applied Arts Vienna under Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel. He is known internationally thanks to his participation in major exhibitions such as Documenta IX in Kassel in 1992 and the Venice Biennale in 2007.

Brandl was a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2004 to 2019. He lives and works in Vienna.
