Biography
Bruno Gironcoli (1936 Villach, Austria - 2010 Vienna, Austria)
Born in 1963, Bruno Gironcoli produced monumental sculptures that portrayed human forms, animals and mechanical fragments in metal. Gironcoli questions the meaning of humanity, exploring the themes of birth, sexuality, emotions, and the trials of life. He does not directly show the human form, instead capturing the psychological view of the human environment and the existential human condition.
Gironcoli started as an apprentice goldsmith, silversmith and coppersmith in Innsbruck, before studying at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna with Eduard Bäumer. In 1977, he was appointed Head of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Austria, until 2004.
He has exhibited internationally, including representing Austria at the 50th Venice Biennial in 2003, receiving several awards, including the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1993 and the Austrian Decoration of Honour for Science and Art in 1996.
Gironcoli died in Vienna in 2010.
